Srinagar, Oct 22 (KNO): The third edition of the Kashmir Marathon will feature special prizes for local runners, Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah announced on Thursday, a move aimed at encouraging greater participation from athletes in the Valley ahead of Sunday's event in Srinagar.
Speaking with reporters on the sidelines of an event in Srinagar, CM Omar, according to the news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO), said the decision was taken following requests from local runners to boost participation in both the half-marathon and full-marathon categories.
"This year, on the demand of our local runners, we have introduced special prizes so that participation in both the half marathon and full marathon gets a further boost," he said.
The Chief Minister said participants from across India and several foreign countries were expected to take part in the marathon, adding that Kashmir's scenic landscape made the event unique.
"If you look at the beauty and surroundings of the Kashmir Marathon, there is hardly any competition. The prize money is also much higher than that offered in many other races," he said.
Recalling his participation in the first two editions, Mr Abdullah said he would not run this year but would attend the event to flag off the race.
"I had the opportunity to participate in the first two marathons. Unfortunately, I will not be participating this year, but I will certainly come to flag it off," he said.
He also urged people who have not yet registered to take part in the event, stressing that participation is more important than winning.
"Those who have not registered still have an opportunity. Come forward, register and participate. Winning is not as important as taking part and enjoying the marathon," he said—(KNO)
